Benbrook

Richard “Mac” McConnell, 89, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, May 22, 2022, due to complications from Alzheimer’s.

Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2022 at Trinity Hills Baptist Church, 6970 Ranch to Market Rd 2871, Benbrook, Texas  76126.  Burial will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Decatur, Texas.

Richard Craig “Mac” McConnell was born September 23, 1932, to Albert and Mae McConnell. He graduated from Polytechnic High School in Fort Worth in 1950, and enlisted in the United States Navy after graduation for four years as an Electrician’s Mate, Petty Officer Second Class. Mac married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Yost, in 1953 and they had three daughters. Mac graduated from Texas Christian University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in General Studies, and retired in 1995 after 24 years as the Director of Marketing for CanTex Industries, Mineral Wells, Texas.

Our Mom and Dad loved dancing and were long-time members of the Fort Worth Rainbow Rounds Club, where Mac served as President for several years during the 1990s. They were also square dancers and cloggers; and they loved big band and swing music. Dad also had a passion for the ocean, sailing, and boating. During our growing-up years, he spent a lot of time and effort assembling and transporting camping gear so that he and Mom could take us on camping vacations to Padre Island every summer. Once we had all graduated from high school and gone off to college, Mom and Dad went on a fabulous Caribbean cruise. After retiring, they spent vacation time in Port Aransas every year.

Dad loved to cook, and family members frequently gathered at their house for Sunday dinners.  He built up a repertoire of gourmet recipes over the years, so he would always make a point of finding out what types of food each person wanted to have on their birthday, and create a special meal for them. He passed down from his own dad to his daughters and grandkids the tradition of making the best scrambled eggs and buttermilk hotcakes in the world.

Mac was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Cathy McConnell; his sister, Betty Lusk; and his parents, Albert and Mae McConnell.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Carolyn; daughters, Cinda and Connie; grandchildren, Allison, Claire, Eric, and Kelsey; niece, Melinda; and nephews, Jay, John, and Jim.

In memory and support, we would welcome, in lieu of flowers, donations by friends and family to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund at https://curealz.org/giving/donate/. 100% of donations made to the charity go towards research.
