Nellie Otteson

October 20, 1930 — August 30, 2021

Fort Worth

Nellie Jacqueline Schofield Otteson, 90, passed away peacefully at her home in Benbrook, Texas on Monday, August 30, 2021.

Nellie grew up on a farm near Manassa, Colorado and lived there until graduating from Manassa High School on May 21, 1948.  She married James Arthur “Art” Otteson on the same day and lived with him in Sanford, Colorado until his death in December of 2007.  Art and Nellie raised eight children and were blessed with 32 grandchildren, 101 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Nellie was first and foremost a mother and homemaker.  She also drove a delivery route for a local dairy and worked as a schoolteacher and bus-driver.  As Art and Nellie neared retirement, she traveled across the state of Colorado and lived with Art in his railroad car.  (He was a bridge and building Foreman for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad.)  After retirement, they served a volunteer mission for the LDS church in Philippi, West Virginia for one year.  Upon returning home, they enjoyed travel, visiting children and grandchildren, and volunteered countless hours serving their church and community.  She enjoyed quilting and other needle-point crafts, gardening and collecting cobalt blue glass knickknacks.  Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with family.

Nellie is preceded in death by husband, James A. Otteson, Sr.; daughter, Jubilee Ann Dickens; son-in-law, Eric Bunker; and son-in-law, Thomas Highley.

She is survived by daughter, Cindy Jo McGinnis and husband, David; daughter, Tamara Denise Norton and husband, Nicky; daughter, Mary Keresa Pottberg and husband, William; son, James A. Otteson, Jr. and wife, Anita; daughter, Kendra Highley; son, Christian S. Otteson and wife, Crystal; son, Jack A. Otteson; and the grandchildren noted earlier.
