John Van Syckle Jr.

July 10, 1947 — June 27, 2021

John Dorsey Van Syckle Jr. “Johnny”, 73, went to be with the Lord June 27, 2021, in Benbrook.

Funeral service:   11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 8, 2021, at Winscott Road Funeral Home, 1001 Winscott Road, Benbrook, Texas 76126.  Burial:  Will follow at 1:15 p.m., at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Cemetery, Dallas, Texas.  Visitation:  6-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 7th at the funeral home.

John was born July 10, 1947, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to John Sr. and Joyce Brown.  He was a decorated Vietnam War veteran, serving as a Combat Engineer. He later spent ten years at the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Departments.

John enjoyed hunting, fishing, and riding motorcycles.  He was a Man’s Man, stern and direct in his stature, but gentle and kind to those dear to him.  John was what we call “Old School”.  He resonated morals and manners and thought everyone should.  His brothers and cousins talked of what a “Stand Up Guy” he was, and he would give you the shirt off his back.

John was honest, hardworking, and very giving of himself in all ways.  Though his “circle” remained small he shared his gifts to all around him.  If you knew John it was an honor to know he was on your side.

He married Amy in 1997 and shared 24 years of memories together.  He adored his wife as they were as one.  His eyes would light up each time he saw her.  They rode motorcycles, snow skied, ran a business together, hunted, fished, and enjoyed life as they knew it with the two of them.  It was not uncommon for them to take a ride on the bikes with Shawn, Bryan, and Hunter, just to see the road on a Sunday afternoon.  Johnny drove a truck and worked full time until his diagnosis in January.  Amy remained by his side, day and night, never leaving him.  Johnny will be missed by many and remembered in the warmth and comfort he provided to all during his time on earth.  Everyone who knew him truly respected the man he was.

John was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Joe Van Syckle, James Webb, and Jackie Van Syckle; one sister, Cherlyn Webb Porter; son, John Dorsey Van Syckle, III; and grandson, Clay Webster.

Survivors:  His loving wife of 24 years, Amy Van Syckle; children, Sheri Beall, Michael Hansen, Sloan Hansen, Johanna Van Syckle Grigsby, and Shawn Van Syckle; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Ted Webb, Dalas Van Syckle, Jerrell Van Syckle, and Jay Van Syckle; three sisters, Sally Wakins, Callie McCarther, and Christal Webb Sami; mother-in-law, Sherry Boyd; and sisters-in-law, Randi Hooten and April Wolfe and their loving extended families; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
