Jerry “Papa” Jones passed away on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at the age of 77.  He was born on August 15, 1944, to Omer Edward Jones and Jane Ruth Ryan Jones in Meridian, Texas. An only child, he was the light of his parents’ lives. Jerry graduated high school in Pilot Point, Texas where he was an accomplished athlete in football, baseball, basketball, and track.  After high school he graduated from the University of North Texas where he was a member of The Geezles Fraternity.  He attended Texas Woman’s University for advanced studies.  During his time at UNT he met his bride of more than 50 years, Delore Durham Jones, through their dear friend Dan Christie in 1967.  Jerry loved his devoted wife even more than he loved to aggravate her.  Jerry and Delore were members of the Celina United Methodist Church.  He was a proud husband, father, “papa,” and great-grandfather.

In addition, Jerry was a longtime athletic director, coach, and teacher with tremendous impact.  In the landscape of Texas High School Football, Jerry is an icon.  With a career spanning more than 25 seasons and an overall record of 206-77-7, he accumulated 31 playoff wins, a Class A State Championship as an assistant with Celina in 1974, and numerous other accolades in Celina, Maypearl, Pilot Point, and Prosper.  He was a Lifetime Member of the Texas High School Coaches Association.  Off the field he was beloved by athletes, students, and co-workers, and was a mentor to many.  In his retirement, he could be found driving his grandchildren wherever they needed to go, visiting his friends, attending numerous family sporting events, and spending time with his dogs.  He was thrilled to be a great-grandfather.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, Omer and Jane “Janie” Jones; his grandson, Johnathon Cooper Jones; his in-laws, B.W. and Hulda Durham; and his brother-in-law, Dusty Durham and wife, Ann.

He is survived by his wife, Delore Durham Jones of Aledo; son, Rocky Jones and wife, Stacy of Aledo; son, Robby Jones and wife, Cheryl of Aledo; son, Russell Jones and wife, Valissa of Montgomery; grandchildren, Emma Jones Cox and husband, Reagan Cox, Dane Jones, Tripp Jones, Cade Jones, Tatum Jones, Jett Jones, Ryder Jones; great-granddaughter, Riley Jane Cox; brother-in-law, Bob Durham and wife, Jane; brother-in-law, Kenneth Durham and wife, Pat; many nieces and nephews; and his lifelong best friends, Pete and Peggy Hollar and Ron and Darlene Sanders.  He is also survived through his impact on countless former athletes, friends, family members, and the coaching staff that became family.

He will be missed profoundly by all who were lucky to know him.
