Samuel R. McCulloch, formerly of Clarinda, Iowa, passed away on May 24, 2015 at the age of 76 in Fort Worth, Texas, and was surrounded by family. After a brave 11 year battle with Alzheimer's Disease he became ill with pneumonia and was unable to recover.
Sam was born in Niagara Falls, New York and was the oldest of five siblings. He loved school and was on the "highest honors" roster every year. Math was his favorite subject. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy as a Master Electrician working in the engine rooms of the USS Rochester and USS Harry E. Hubbard. He was very proud of his military service that took him around the world and he loved to talk about it. He also love it when he saw the American Flag flying high.
Sam married Mary Marshall in 1960 and they had two children, Cindy and Scott. In the early years of his career, he was in Upper Management for K-mart and Kresge stores in California, Washington, Illinois and Missouri. The family then moved to Clarinda, Iowa and he managed the Watkin's True Value Store for a couple of years until it burned to the ground on New Year's Eve. Sam and Mary (along with a partner) owned and operated the Gamble's Hardware Store on the square for several years afterward. Sam finished his career as a Correctional Officer at the Clarinda Correctional Facility working there for 21 years retiring in 2003. He and Mary moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 2010 to be closer to family.
Sam was very organized, articulate, and curious. He loved woodworking, traveling and exploring new things. He loved animals, liked long chats over a cup of coffee, and had a great sense of humor. He will be missed by all who knew him. There will be a private memorial for the family at a later date.
He was preceeded in death by his parents, George and Maud McCulloch of Niagara Falls, NY; sister, Jane Cariker (husband Jerry) of Beatty, NV; brother, Jimmy McCulloch of Niagara Falls, NY; and brother-in-law, Ray Kanouff of Petersburg, IL.
He is survived by Mary his wife of 55 years of Fort Worth,TX; daughter, Cindy Cook (husband Mike) of Fort Worth, TX ; son, Scott McCulloch (wife Tiffany and their sons Ben and Jake) of Glen Rock, NJ; sister, Edith Kanouff of Petersburg, IL and brother, David McCulloch (wife Roberta) of Niagara Falls, NY and many nieces and nephews scattered throughout the United States.
