Lawrence Matthew
Mickelson
April 5, 1971 – April 30, 2026
Lawrence “Larry” Mickelson leaves behind a profound void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Larry was truly one of a kind—a man deeply loved by everyone fortunate enough to know him. Strong in character, with a heart of gold and a life guided by integrity, he touched countless lives through his generosity, kindness, and unwavering loyalty.
A dedicated Marine, Larry proudly served his country as a Crew Chief on the CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopters, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He loved his country deeply and served with honor, courage, and pride, fighting for the freedoms we all share. The values of service, discipline, and brotherhood remained at the core of who he was throughout his life. Growing up as a surfer, Larry was often affectionately known as the “original Spicoli,” carrying his lifelong love of the ocean with him wherever life took him.
Following his military service, Larry continued that enduring bond of brotherhood as a patched member of the Marine Corps Riders (BMCR), beginning in 1996. A proud and active member for 31 years, he also served as President of the North Carolina Chapter for three years. The camaraderie, loyalty, and lifelong friendships he shared with his brothers were among the most meaningful aspects of his life.
Larry earned a Bachelor’s degree in Diplomacy and Military Studies, followed by a Master’s degree in Public Administration with a minor in Criminal Justice and Corrections.
Later in life, Larry met Katherine, and together they shared a deep, meaningful, and devoted partnership built on love, respect, laughter, and companionship, looking forward to the rest of their lives together. He also leaves behind his beloved dogs, who brought him constant joy and companionship.
Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Christine Cavin.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine; his loving father, Larry Mickelson Sr., stepmother, Shelly; his sister, Holly; his brothers, Ryan and his wife Tiffany, and Cody, to whom he was a loving brother and steadfast protector; his cherished nieces and nephews, Emily Iris, Abigail Rose, and James. Larry also leaves behind many extended family members, brothers from the Marine Corps Riders, and close friends who will forever cherish his memory in their hearts.
A private family viewing will be held in Fort Worth, followed by an honorable ceremony at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, California.
Larry will be deeply missed, but his spirit, strength, loyalty, and love will live on in all those who knew and loved him.
