In Loving Memory of Jackie “Jack” Joe Garison
Early Life and Family
Jackie Joe Garison, affectionately known as “Jack,” was born on November 27, 1940, in Hastings, Oklahoma. He was the beloved son of Lora Blay Garison and Oscar Lee Garison, both of whom preceded him in death. He was the youngest of seven siblings. Jack grew up in Waurika, OK but he often joked that he was born on the bank of the Red River, a detail that became part of his cherished family lore. He had many fond memories about growing up in Hastings and Waurika that he would share with his friends and family often.
He was a devoted husband to Barbara Garison, whom he met at The White Elephant Saloon in the Stockyards. They soon married, and Jack adopted Shannon on her sixth birthday, loving her as his own from the very start. Several years later, Amanda came along as a joyful surprise, completing their family. Their marriage lasted 29 years, filled with love and companionship, until Barbara’s passing on June 22, 2011.
Jack’s siblings—Lou Dean, Jean Wells, Rene Churchman, Preston Garison, Dorvin Garison, and Gerald Garison—also preceded him in death. He is survived by his sons, Steve and Jeff Garison; his daughters, Shannon Mulroy and Amanda Mitchell; and his sons-in-law, James Mulroy and Clark Mitchell. Jack’s legacy continues through his grandchildren: Sloan Mulroy; Simone Krumholz and her husband, Grant Krumholz; and Will Mitchell.
Service and Career
Jack came from a proud family of service. While his three older brothers honored their country in the Navy, Jack felt called to the Army, choosing a different path but serving with the same devotion and courage that marked his family’s legacy.
He began his professional journey with Hobbs/Fruehauf Trailer Corporation, where he rose to the role of general foreman and built many lifelong friendships. Later, he worked for the City of Benbrook’s Parks Department and Street Department, retiring not once but twice—a testament to his dedication and the high regard in which he was held by his colleagues and community.
Passions and Hobbies
Jack was an avid sports fan, especially of football and basketball. He was a loyal University of Oklahoma Sooners fan. You always knew when it was gameday around the house. He also took great joy in supporting the Springtown Porcupines on Friday nights, rarely missing a game. Accompanied by Shannon, he traveled to all the away games, no matter the distance.
He had a passion for classic cars—often visiting car shows—and enjoyed the golden era of country music legends like Bob Wills, Don Williams, and George Jones. Those songs became the soundtrack of countless memories, and it was through him that Amanda inherited her love for classic country music.
His creativity and skill shone in his woodworking. In his free time, he could be found “piddlin’” in his workshop, where he built furniture, decks, fences, dog houses, and much more—there was little he couldn’t create with his hands. He was also famous for his unique ability to open his throat and guzzle a beer in a single swallow, a feat that delighted friends and family alike.
Jack cherished the 40 acres he and Barbara purchased in Springtown. He found peace and happiness working the land and driving his beloved John Deere tractor. He took great pride in his home, maintaining one of the most beautiful yards in Benbrook.
Community, Faith, and Character
Jack was a valued member of Trinity Hills Baptist Church in Benbrook, where he formed close friendships and practiced his faith faithfully, reading his Bible daily. His strong Christian values guided his actions and relationships.
He was also a familiar face at the Benbrook Waffle House. It would be an understatement to say that he was loved by staff and fellow coffee drinkers.
Jack was truly loved by everyone. If you knew him, you know what a blessing it was to have him in your life. He was the kindest man, the easiest to love, and truly one of a kind. Jack had a strong love for his family, one that could never be replaced. Amanda and Shannon are constantly reminded of his sweet and gentle nature, and he will forever be missed by everyone.
