Gene Vance

November 23, 1927 — April 23, 2020

Command Sergeant Major (R) U.S. Army, Gene Howard Vance, passed away on April 23, 2020 at a hospice facility in Fort Worth, Texas.

Services: An inurnment for Sergeant Major Vance, with full military honors, will be scheduled at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery as soon as the Corona Virus Quarantine restrictions are lifted.

Howard was born in November 23, 1927 in Garner, Texas. He joined the US Navy at age 17 and served in the Pacific during WWII. Howard later joined the US Army and served 20 years before retiring in 1971. He was a 12 year member of the elite Special Forces (Green Berets) and served in Munich with the 11th Airborne Division, Bad Tolz, Germany 10th Special Forces Group, Okinawa and Vietnam with Special Forces. Howard also was a National Guard Advisor to a Special Forces Group in Salt Lake City, Utah. After his retirement from the Army, Howard served an additional 17 years working for the Federal Aviation Administration.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ms. Jim and Zeb Vance; sister, Dorthea Lee Wood; and brother, Retired Lt. Col. James Thomas Vance.

Survivors: Loving wife of 63 years, Sammie Probes Vance; daughter, Cindy Vance Young; daughter, Saralyn Vance Carrillo and husband, Julio Carrillo; grandsons, Matthew Young and wife, Cara, Ryan Young and wife, Marty, and Andrew Carrillo; grandaughter, Alex Carrillo; great-grandsons, Hayden Vanskike, Brennen Vanskike, and Curt Fallis; and great-granddaughter, Abigail Young.
