Mrs. Evelyn Graves Akin, a resident of the Watermark at Broadway-Cityview of Fort Worth, Texas passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 8, 2024 at the age of 88.
Evelyn was born on November 26, 1935, in Wichita Falls, Texas to Oscar and Furn Graves. She was the youngest daughter of three children. She graduated as valedictorian from Henrietta High School and attended Texas University. Evelyn married George H. Akin on September 26, 1956. George was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army on 23 November 1956 and Evelyn entered the ranks as a military spouse. While stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky in 1957 for George’s Armor Officer Basic Course, Evelyn welcomed the arrival of daughter, Cynthia Akin, and later twin boys, Mike and Mark Akin in 1958. She had son, George (Greg) Akin in 1962 at Frankfurt, Germany. Evelyn was an enthusiastic traveler who raised four children and supported the career of her husband while volunteering in numerous military family organizations. She moved the family over twenty times to areas that included, Germany, Korea, Turkey and multiple assignments in the United States. Her service to Army soldiers and families culminated after 35 years with George’s promotion to Major General and all four children entering the Army as either soldiers or spouses. Evelyn was the family’s “rock” and sole parent when George was stationed overseas in Korea and Vietnam on unaccompanied tours. She was George’s inspiration and created a loving family home wherever she was stationed. She personally enjoyed traveling, entertaining, needlepoint, and golf. Evelyn ensured the balance between health, family and career were always maintained. She was an inspirational woman, a proud Texan, a patriot, a wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will be fondly remembered and missed by her surviving family and friends.
