Ellen Gay was born November 1, 1936, in Weatherford, Texas, to Minnie Gladys and Willard Edward MacNelly, the first of four children, growing up in Weatherford working at the Herald Newspaper ran by her father. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, and current member of Western Hills Church of Christ, where she spent many years helping with their food bank. She spent 20 plus years feeding the homeless every Wednesday in downtown Fort Worth at Under The Tree. Ellen loved quilting and made many beautiful quilts for family.
Ellen Gay was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Herschel in 2005; her daughter, Lori Gay Casas in 2004; and a sister, Janet Thomas in 2017.
