Donald Doane

January 25, 1931 — November 9, 2021

Donald Doane, 90, of Fort Worth passed away November 9, 2021. He was born on January 25, 1931, in Ringwood, Oklahoma to Luther and Amy Doane. He was the eighth of nine children. Donald’s mother passed away when he was three years old, and Donald and his younger brother, DeWayne, went to live with Amy’s sister, Gladys and her husband, B.D. Clement in Amarillo, Texas. The brothers also shared their home with his maternal grandfather, Abner Glover. Gladys quickly became “Mom”, and along with “Unc. D.” they raised the boys as their own. In fact, throughout school, Donald was known as Donald Clement. Donald graduated from Amarillo High School in 1949.

At the age of 20, Donald enlisted in the Army and served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 achieving the rank of Corporal. He served in the Army Reserve for three more years. During his years of service, he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, and the United Nations Service Medal.

After being honorably discharged from the Army, Donald moved to Houston, where he attended the University of Houston for two years. Donald worked for the Texas Department of Transportation (back then known as the Highway Department), and that is where he met Effie LaVerne Snider. They married on October 19, 1963. Together they raised three children, Carolyn, Donna and David.

After retiring from Bowen Tool, Donald and Effie moved to Onalaska, Texas, to enjoy the country life in their retirement. Donald continued to live in Onalaska after Effie’s death in 2003. Before moving to Fort Worth in 2011 to be closer to his daughter, Donna, Donald lived in Magnolia, Texas with his grandson, Joshua, and his family.

Donald had a passion for wood-working and anything related to wood. He developed this love when he served as an apprentice to a cabinet maker while he was in high school. He was always known to be tinkering in his garage, working on a project. His family has been blessed to have many of these projects in their homes. Donald loved to be outdoors. As he aged and his body didn’t allow much activity, he would set outside for hours, just to be in nature.

Donald is preceded in death by his parents, Luther Ellsworth, and Amy Amanda Doane and Gladys Susan and B.D. Clement; his wife of 40 years, Effie LaVerne Snider Doane; his grandson, Christopher Mayes; his great-grandson, Kolton Munoz; brothers, Eugene U. Doane, Luther Ellsworth Doane Jr., and Ernest LeRoy Doane; and sisters, Julia Marie Doane Jantz, Inis Lucile Doane Dunigan, and Amy Berniece Doane Mecum.

He is survived by his brothers, Melvin Janoe Doane and Hugh DeWayne Doane; daughters, Carolyn Rae Doane Stanley and husband, Claude; Donna Lynn Doane Mayes and husband, Timothy; and son, David Lee Doane and wife, Lisa. He is also survived by grandchildren, Joshua O’Neal Doane and wife, Stacey, Jennifer Rae Stanley Munoz, Louis Edward Cummins, and David Alvin Aaron Doane; as well as nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
